Great line from this thread.

Thanks, ACL - my ticket home this Thursday is $200 more than usual because we now have a national festival, with no better acts than Aqua Fest. Aqua Fest - run for the community, not for profit. Where you didn't have to buy a whole weekend - just when you wanted to go. That actually had different acts in different weekends. That didn't pimp out Zilker Park. That had music for everyone. That was more than just music.

I know this is an annual (actually, semi-annual when you throw in SXSW) rant of mine. But if any of you think Austin is better with ACL than with Aqua Fest, you are clueless.

Here here, and Aqua Fest had a really cool water parade after dark.

Those were awesome days before Austin got "weird".

Czech Nite and Tejano Nite were our favorites.

But wasn't Aqua Fest private and for-profit too?

I don't miss it.

Ya got a link for that? The wikipedia article is vague, says the City subsidized it in the early years, later the City was the Festival's biggest creditor. No indication that that it was set up as a non-profit or benefited anyone. Seems like profitability was a constant issue.

I only knew Aqua Fest in its later incarnations, 1990-98.

Aquafest = ACL (fairly similar fun/pain in the *ss ratio.....up to about 4 years ago).

Aquafest > ACL (from the past 4 years).

ACL was getting more crowded, more expensive, with less interesting acts (for me). Less roots/americana/texana & way more hipster/faux indy than it used to be. Aquafest was always eclectic & visitor friendly.

hound <----- remembers when a SAHM was a music god & not some female that has a phone imbedded in her ear.... driving a prius or honda van with stick figure stickers on the back window.

It was awesome days when Austin was weird, too. Heck, Aquafest was part of the weird! It wasn't the weird, it's the commercialization and homogenization that's spoiled things.

Too hot - absolutely the worst time of year to hold a large outdoor festival.
