I had my ears pierced with a needle and white sewing thread that was doubled and doubled again before forcing the needle through my earlobe. Boy did it hurt! Had to use baby oil and alcohol on the threads and pull the threads through the lobe many times a day. I ended up with small holes that most earrings were to large to go through.

Fast forward to my owning a beauty shop... I used to pierce ears with a metal gun in my beauty shop. There was no blood and we used surgical stainless steel that didn't have any nickle in them. I never had any problems with the many ears I pierced. In fact, now that I am thinking about it, I think my youngest daughter now has the gun.

My daughters pierced at 4 months by the pediatrician at the 4 months check-up. Only waited that long because the pedi said we had to have the 2nd set of shots at 4 months before they would do it. Any longer and I would have gone to Claire's. And it didn't require any aftercare. In my family, the girls have their rates pierced as infants. Mine was done at the 2 days old before we even left the hospital in the UK. And many hospitals still do this at birth in the Uk if you request it. Funny enough in the UK, they don't do circumcision at the hospital but here they do. Just different strokes I guess.

I had mine done when I was 21. I'm not sure it was a Claire's (this is a long time ago,) but it was in a mall at a retail establishment. It hurt for a half hour, but I went to the ice cream place close by, and by the time I finished my cone, the pain was better. No complications, and the holes well placed. They used a gun and inserted gold studs with locking backs and posts that were a bit larger than most earings, so that the holes would be adequate.
