Back to the original topic...

Check out the Rattan Creek neighborhood - between Parmer and 183, west of McNeil. Quiet, nice parks, mature trees, Round Rock schools, and about 7-8 minutes to the Howard train station if you want to hop downtown on the weekends. You can get a roomy house for well under $375K, then use the extra money for some remodel and personal touches.

Disclaimer: I'm biased. I live in that neighborhood

Look A number of people Suggested Jollywood Area and they are correct it is relatively bike friendly and it probably has one of the best schools in Austin Area. but the problem with Jollywood (I live here) here is that the Houses were mostly built in 70s timeframe. from Jollywood Area you should be able to get to downtown in 40-60 minutes depending on morning traffic.

second suggestion:

Now if you truly want large houses that are in upper middle class neighborhood, relatively well built, good parks and good schools and super safe. I would suggest the neighborhood sometimes called HunterChase bound by the following cross streets. West of ParmerLane, East of 183, North of McNeil Rd and South of Anderson Mill Road.

This neighborhood is very close to North Austin Tech Hubs such as Dell, Ebay, Apple, IBM
But it will take as many as 50 minutes to get to downtown.

But For 300K you will get a very nice Home here. caution Houses in this neighborhood historically has not appreciated as fast as other neighborhoods but it is still a very good place to live.
