LeaveWI - love the name. After shoveling 3 inches of slush today I actually called a realtor friend. I lived in the Northern burbs of Milwaukee about 10 years ago and thought I had died and gone to Stepford (a-hem, Mequon). I hated the Milwaukee area. *VERY* conservative. No woman goes out without make up (those who do are considered "odd") and all the men wear chinos. Jeans are reserved for "hoe-down" dress up parties. May have mellowed in 10 years, but I kind of doubt it. The citizens were all up in arms when the grocery store wanted to stay open until 9pm. "What decent person (read: woman) would go out to get groceries after 4pm!"

Hi Megan- where you at now? Mequon, Lake country Wauk Cty is even worse now than 10 yrs ago as far as stepford like people. It's like A&F or Aeropostale, fake tans, cell phones are govt issue around here. Most people go around with either a scowl or nose in air in thier SUV's hummers or Lexus, looking down at the "little people" who obviously must be lazy if they make under 100K. Man please someone help me get out of this conservative purgatory

I live in Madison and would be perfectly happy here if it weren't for the weather. I realize that some may think that a rather silly reason to move, but I just don't think I can take the dark and cold another year. I have a little temp thingamjigy in the corner of my pc desktop that tells Austin and Madison weather. Today it was 83 there and 32 here. Right now it is 57 in Austin and 25 here.

I only lived in Mequon for 12 long months, but I grew up in Janesville which is actually worst. I also lived in Eau Claire for 2.5 years, that wasn't much fun either.

Madison is the only place I'd live in Wisconsin (really the Midwest). I've heard that Austin has all the good points of Madison, many plus's unique to Austin and the perks of a larger city without as many of the downsides as other similar sized towns.

Where are you from originally, LeaveWI?

Menomonee Falls, a suburb NW of milwaukee. Growing up here was fine, but thsi whole area has morphed into an arrogant affluent suburban area, complete with mc mansions filled with snobs and their snoblings. The weather is the biggest reason I want to leave, and from the time I have spent on CD, lots of people move because of it. There is nothing more energy draining than being trapped 5-6 months of the year in a gloomy area. It just sucks the life right out of a person. Maybe that's why a lot the people I see around here have such a sour look on their faces a lot of the time, even the young "beautiful" people.

I am so jealous!! We moved from Austin, the greatest place on Earth just about 2 years ago!! Best of luck to you.
I would also recommend SoCo and Travis Heights for someone your age.

That is one problem with Austin being such a highly-educated city; the college degree has been quite devalued over the years. EVERYONE has an MBA... they're a dime a dozen around here.
