Spelman recently calculated that over the past 15 years, the city’s general-fund spending rose 158 percent, while the collective income of Austin residents rose 107 percent. (The calculation includes new people moving to Austin and the income they bring.) If Austinites were sending the same portion of their paycheck to the city’s general fund as they were in 1999, the average person would be paying about $161 less each year, according to an American-Statesman analysis that expands on his calculations.

“We are systematically taking more out of people’s pockets,” Spelman said.

I am happy to see this effort to link the city budget to what citizens income.

Ironically, its the numerous pet projects promoted by council members that continues to inflate the general fund budget year after year.

A drop in the bucket compared to salaries and pension liabilities - particularly for first responders.

Couldn't find this at the time, but Kohmet's right:

Rather than increase the number of officers to keep up with an expanding population, over the last decade Austin police became the highest paid officers in Texas, and when adjusted for the cost of living, the highest paid in the nation. Not only that, the 2004 contract in particular made it more difficult to discipline bad cops and gutted police oversight mechanisms.

Crimes happen, police respond. Police dont lurk for these types of crimes.
