Hello everyone!

My husband and I have been trying to determine where we are going to relocate in June from Pensacola fl. We've narrowed our search down to Houston or Austin. My husband is in construction and I work in the medical field. We are a conservative family with 5 kids. We are looking for low crime rates, excellent school districts, affordable housing, and parks/family attractions. We are not much into the night life so I worry about Austin being the better area for us?! Any advice or insight? Thank you!!

What do you consider to be affordable for housing? Housing in the Austin area is in very high demand right now so it might be more expensive than what you would expect for all your wants. If you can afford it, you can find everything that you're looking for here.

Do you have jobs lined up? IMO, jobs would be easier to find in Houston than Austin. Houston is going to be less expensive as well.

Angelos Angelou real estate prediction for 2014

Austin economist forecasts strong growth - Community Impact Newspaper

Angelou was bullish about local real estate markets for the next two years.

He said that Austin had only 3.8 months of inventory available and forecast a substantial shortage in single-family housing in the city. He also predicted increases in rents.

"If you don't have a house, buy a house. If you are looking to invest money, buy single-family houses," he said.

He predicted double-digit growth rates in real estate properties for the next three to four years.
Austin was the third lowest city for violent crime last year, property crime is high, mostly petty theft, theft from cars, etc. Austin is not just a party town, there are lots of people living here who rarely go downtown for the night life.

Construction has picked up considerably, with a surge in apartment and housing construction last year. http://www.city-data.com/forum/31039266-post41.html
