Depending on where in Austin you go, I'd recommend Lampasas as the first choice, with Llano then Burnet.

Wow...125 miles to north north Austin...20 more if you are going downtown...Dang!

I'll second Lampasas as a good recommendation to split the commutes...but they will BOTH be long, especially if the Austin location isn't north-north Austin. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Where in Austin will you be working, NW I hope, it will make a huge difference.

Google maps puts the distance and commute times from Brownwood, TX to Austin and 140 miles, 2 hours and 18 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. You can double that Austin commute during rush hour.

The Austin Renaissance Hotel? (that's in the Arboretum NW)

3-4 quick questions to help us help you:

- Are you renting or buying? Budget ??
- Will she be commuting during regular commute times (what's her probable commute times).
- Do you have any kiddos? (are schools a consideration at all)
- Where are you coming from. Have you ever lived in a small town in flyover country?
- What type of things do you like to do, what type of environment do you enjoy?

Off the top of my head, if my wife worked at the Arboretum (& I had to commute to Brownwood), I'd consider having my wife live within 30 miles (NW) of NW Austin & I'd commute to Brownwood (2 hours) on Monday morning & stay a 2-4 nights in a notel (or even get a cheap apartment in Bwood). But we don't know your situation. (so, please answer the above questions). Good luck.

I've driven that stretch 6-8 times in the past 3 years (straight up 183).

If living in suburban Austin isn't an option.....Lampasas seems like a nice town. & Goldwaithe seems like a neat teeny tiny town. (& both are county seats).

But I wouldn't want my wife commuting from either (especially Goldthwaite which is 40 min. even further than Lampasas).

What does this mean? I leave at 5:50am & am at my office at 6am. (will your commute be earlier?) Why are so many OPers so cryptic?

Whatever....without additional info, I'd choose Lampasas. Nice town, river runs through it, both kinds of music available on the local radio (C...AND W), plenty to do....especially if you like football on Friday & Lubys or the Kountry Korral on Saturday . Commute to Arboretum will be 60-110 minutes depending on the time of day.
