My wife and I bought 2 3 barrel systems (165 gallons each) from Austin Green Water. We saw them on the Austin Master Garden Tour and we love them!!! www.austingreenwater.com is their website. We've seen our water bill lowered and love helping the environment!! They are a local company, owned by two brothers (Ben and John) and we've recommended them to our friends. They also sell at Callahan's General Store (by the airport in Austin) This company also has given to local charities and helps many local Austin water conservation projects...check them out!! Thanks too for this great thread on rain barrels...they really really work good in the community!!

My father got some rain barrels for practically nothing, I don't remember the exact price he paid, but I think it was less then $20 a barrel. What he did was call a few of local Coke and Dr.pepper bottling plants and ask if they had any they were getting rid of. He went down and picked up eight of them. They smell like soda, but are high quality plastic rain barrels with good lids.

We bought ours from Green Water Austin - like some of the others on here. What we liked about them is that they are made from recycled barrels and they brought them out and located them where we wanted them. They will also do the install from gutter to barrel, but we didn't need that. We did appreciate them setting them up in 3 different locations around the yard.

That is a really good buy EESaustin, If those are opaque barrels, don't allow light in, that is a really good deal. You will only have to harvest 3,000 gallons of water from it to break even on the cost of the barrel. That is very cost effective compared to most of them.

However keeping the light out is important, otherwise they promote bacteria and algae growth which will clog the barrel, piping or any drains you have in it.
