They won't be able to get a change in the auto franchise law for over a year--if it is even possible. I gotta believe they will announce a site before then.

And I gotta make one correction to SCM's post--the auto franchisees aren't the MOST powerful trade group. That would be the title insurance folks.

GPurcell - you might be right. But TADA was on top when they had the most powerful lobbyist in the state, Gene Fondren, as their director. He was the one that crafted the law that created the MVC - trading the "lemon law" for the franchising provisions. TADA is still pretty powerful - and in every legislature district in the state. A single project will never be able to counter that.

Besides - of the four states they are looking at, they will never pick the one furthest from their plant in California, multiplying their shipping costs needlessly.

they'll build their plant with absolutely no over-site because they're drowning in "enticements". They pollute the heck out of the area,
Having worked on the regulation side of things, companies MUCH, MUCH bigger than Tesla have been put under the microscope prior to construction permits issued. It is almost entertaining to watch some foreign companies struggle to grasp the concept that you can't just buy your permit at a meeting with some state officials.

I don't know how long it's been difficult for big companies to build but I can say it hasn't always been that way. The number of superfund sites is astounding. Or perhaps they've magically gone away.
