We are moving to Austin and are looking for a home where we can be in a neighborhood that has people that are interested in talking about ideas not things. We are coming from a place where the first questions we were asked were, " do you play tennis or golf and which country club are you joining?' Is there an area that is like that but where we can also have a private yard with our own pool? Our budget is 550k. We are empty nesters so not concerned about school districts or resale because we would love to settle in Austin.

I need ideas for neighborhoods to look at where we could have a private yard with a pool but also be within 20 minutes of the city. Schools and resale are not an issue. Budget is 550k Does such a place exist?

You can still buy a house in Hyde Park for around $300,000.
For $550,000 you can get something really cute!

This one is quite lovely:

Zip Code is 78751. It's 3 miles to the Capitol, just north of the university.

Sun City or Onion Creek.

Google "10216 Pinehurst" to get an idea what 550K will purchase in Austin.

I don't think they meant 20 minutes to Georgetown when they said "within 20 minutes of the city".

And why would you mention 10216 Pinehurst??? It sold for more than 550K TEN years ago!

From the tone of the OP's post I didn't think a pool was a deal-breaker.

. . .from the other duplicate post: "We are moving to Austin and are looking for a home where we can be in a neighborhood that has people that are interested in talking about ideas not things. and anyway, if you can buy a house for around 400k in hyde park you can build a pool.

But thanks.

It's within the city limits of Austin, and it sold on June 28th 2012 for 550K. Look it up on Redfin.
