So, I need to meet up with my family in Austin, and am taking the Amtrak Texas Eagle one-way from Austin to Dallas. I look forward to the travel to catch up on my reading.

Does anyone have or know of experiences and issues with parking overnight in a lot that is listed as unattended? As a downtown location with free parking, how is availability of spots on a Saturday?

Would you recommend any nearby parking garage for an overnight where you pay a reasonable fee for more safety?

Your input is appreciated.

PS: I'll take any book recommendations too. OK, I'm kidding a bit, but not completely ...

I live in North Austin, and I'm looking at going to Taylor or Temple Amtrak station as an alternative, if you have any experience with those.

Never really saw any place that I would want to leave my car downtown by the station. Have been to the Temple station and they have a good size parking lot though I don't know if it's a safe overnight area.

I might leave it a night there but no more. Could you transit in on one of the Lamar/C. Chavez routes?

On a side note Amtrak takes bicycles for a small fee and sells boxes for you to pack them in.

We hop on Amtrak from Austin to Dallas a couple times a year and always leave our car at the Austin station for a couple days. Never have had any problems at all.
