I want to find someone to come get rid of all the tons of oak leaves, and then mow/edge/blow at a reasonable rate. I don't want to sign a contract. I'm in Northwest Austin - does anyone have a good recommendation? We have use Affordable Lawn Care in the past - they charged $40 for mow/edge/blow and then $5/bag of leaves, which would push us over $150. Last year, my husband and I raked the front yard only and bagged about 40 bags of leaves - ugh, and that's not even considering the back yard. Want to hire someone this year. Thanks!

No one? I sent a message to what looked like a good one on craigslist and got no response.

I'd ask a neighbor who gets good service from their lawnscaper...better chance that the folks will do a good job if they have to return to the neighborhood frequently.

I would highly suggest Jesus Cepeda of JC Lawn Services -- 512-284-5852 or you can find them on FB (that's how I first contacted them...sent a message on FB and he called back immediately). We used him for weeding our flowerbed, adding some dirt, and mulching and were very pleased! Many people in our neighborhood have used him for lawn services and I haven't heard any complaints.

Why do people remove leaves from their lawns? That's where their grass gets its nutrients from and where the new soil comes from. They're like little multivitamins falling from the trees. I just leave (heh) mine and they break down quickly and I have a lush lawn all the time. Plus I don't spend money and fossil fuels shipping them off somewhere and then needing to spend more money to buy nutrients to add to the soil.

Our front yard is completely shaded by live oaks. Live oak leaves are a little different, from my understanding. They are very acidic and take years to break down and are pretty much never used as a nutrient-giver. I raked up a bunch to use on flower beds as a moisture-retaining mulch, but there are still probably 25 bags in the front yard and at least 50 in the back yard ... so that's another reason. There are TONS.

We have 68 live oaks covering our backyard alone. Right now, fallen leaves from these trees are suffocating our lawn; if not removed, our grass would die.

YES! So do you do it yourself, or do you have someone do it?

We usually do it. We are only one of two families on our street that does our yard care ourselves. That said, we also have roughly a .37 acre lot, the biggest in the neighborhood. I thought it couldn't hurt to get a quote for the leaves since they are so abundant this year... one place never returned our call, the second place made an appt with us (took off work early to come home and meet at 4pm) and they never showed up or called, and the last place says $380. which is no good at all.

Once again, well be renting the professional blower from HD this weekend and spending eight hours on leaf mitigation.

You think $380 is too much, but you (plural, I imagine) will spend 8 hours this weekend (for a total of 16 man hours) cleaning leaves, plus the cost of equipment rental. How much is your time worth, or more importantly, how much do you think other people's time is worth? Not much by the sounds of it.
It's pretty labor intensive stuff, people generally don't like to work for nothing.
