We're traveling in July, and need good hotel recommendations where we can both park a rental and eat and experience the local vibe near the hotel area.

What to you mean by moderate? You will have to use priceline to get rates near or below $100 a night at any downtown hotel.

Our local vibe no longer comes cheap!

Otherwise, there is a Motel 6 near Airport and I35 just north of downtown and another just south, between Oltorf and Woodland. Nothing to walk to at either or any sort of vibe. You would have to take a cab or drive downtown for that.

Don't know what fairly moderate means to you, but you might check out Austin Motel. Nothing fancy but the location can't be beat.

do a search on this forum for priceline and biddingfortravel. I explained how to get the 4* hotels for around 80-120/night.

There is a La Quinta next to the Capitol and you might find something on Homeaway. Good luck!
