Hello!

I'm an out of state applicant for a professional position and I'm expecting to get a job offer from the City of Austin very soon. I was wondering if anybody else on this forum has recently completed a similar transition and, if so, did you receive any financial relocation assistance from the City? If so, did you need to ask for it?

I'm a first time poster in this forum and while I don't believe this question has been asked before it might have been, so pardon me if it has.

yeah those are hourly. I don't know if that means that all staff are non-exempt or if they just multiply it out by your full-time status to arrive at what your salary is. (My thought is the latter.. I doubt that their entire staff is really hourly)

All jobs that I am aware of at the City of Austin have compensation described as an hourly rate bases, although most of them to not pay extra for overtime beyond the normal 40 hour work week.

To answer the OP's original question, I was with the City 23 years, retired now, and never heard of them paying a Relocation Assistance. They may do that in rare occasions if you are specially qualified, but you will probably have to ask for it to find out if it is available. There are lots of qualified people here in Austin, I can't imagine why the City would need to pay a Relocation Bonus for anyone unless you are talking about Department Director or City Manager level jobs.

The federal government does it *all* the time.

City government seems to only do it for the high end director type jobs, where they are trying to lure experience from other states to fill roles.

Anything less than that, don't count on it.

I came to Austin with my clothes in a garbage bag in the trunk of my car, and nothing else.

I was just curious what the norm was for the city, if there was one at all. I didn't really have any expectations either way. I personally know a number of people who have moved across country to Austin, and about half of them have gotten some form of assistance, but none of them worked for the city proper.

I can see how it could easily become politically charged if a city government chose to hire "outsiders" and then help them relocate. It sounds like Austin is one of those booming places that is struggling to cope with the influx of new people.

Over half the people I have met in Austin are not from here.

I would imagine that most positions do not require a relocation package for the person to take the job, and employers do not have to offer it, so they won't.

Only people I have met who got relocation packages were involved in the military.
