PadMapper Apartment Search is a useful map based tool to see what apartment rents are going for in any particular area.

Also http://www.trulia.com/local/austin-t...points:1_crime shows you the high crime areas on a map of Austin. keep in mind that property crimes are high here but violent crimes are very low. Any area with a lot of parking lots will show high property crimes such as burglary from vehicles and petty theft.

I'm back with some information. Thanks to all who have posted!

I will be working in a building on the Riata Trace Parkway, in the 78727-7169 zip code. The closer to there, the better methinks.

I'm going to begin looking for places near there now. Any suggestions on that zip and/or the surrounding areas?

Three weeks until I'll be moving. Can't wait!

The easy answer is RIATA Apartments. With over 2000 units, they are the epicenter of that area. With all the amenities and activities, it will be a great way to meet others who are discovering Austin.

My recommendation as well. Here's the link: Apartment For Rent - Austin, TX - RIATA

If you want to look around, check out the Arboretum area. Just make sure you are in the 78759 zip code. It's just a few miles away and has lots of shopping and restaurants. I say that because some apartments in the 78758 zip will advertise Arboretum area but it's in a less desirable area.

When I first moved down here 4 years ago, I rented an apartment at Hard Rock Canyon. It is in the Arboretum Area off Jollyville Road. Could walk or bike ride to a lot of places close by. Area sort of reminds you of Pittsburgh because of all the hills around it. Watch out for some really bad apartment complexes on Jollyville road. RIATA Apartments would be a good choice for someone young and single. I wanted peace and quiet.

Thanks for the info! I currently have a spreadsheet going that includes complexes, prices, features, etc.

RIATA is literally a five minute walk from my workplace, so that would be fantastic. However, I haven't seen anywhere that they have air conditioning, which is probably going to be a necessity for me as I adjust to the absurd heat of Texas. Can anybody confirm that they do or don't have A/C in RIATA rooms? I also have questions about parking, washer/dryers, and utilities there. I'll have to give them a call and find all of this information out, but I figured I'd see if anybody had any firsthand experience here.

Thanks!
T

They don't list it because it's assumed everywhere in Texas has AC - how do you think we survive the absurd heat?

PERFECT! I was talking to some people at my training program today and mentioned that I figured A/C would be standard in Texas and they said they didn't think so. They were mostly from Arizona so I figured they knew heat, but that's awesome to hear.

yeah, not just A/C but COLD A/C

I have seen stand alone laundry rooms in RIATA; but I would imagine many apts have the hookups for your own WlD
