Hi,
I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and am interested in possibly moving to the
Austin area. I am hoping someone can let me in on where the funky, artsy
neighborhoods are and the crime isn't terrible. Baton Rouge has gone downhill
since Katrina and I was hoping to find something similar to our Spanish Town and
Garden District areas. Any help would be much appreciated.

We have some great neighborhoods but they are going to cost you... a lot. Most of Austin's affordable areas are in the outer sprawl, where there is subdivision upon subdivision of cookie-cutter housing. The closer you get to downtown and the cool neighborhoods, the more outrageous the pricing gets. I used to live in the Bouldin area and wanted to buy a house there, but I couldn't afford to pay $350,000 for a 2-1 with the roof falling in.

Default Cool Neighborhoods

There are plenty of funky, artsy neighborhoods in Austin but like the previous poster said, they'll cost you. What is your housing budget, or are you renting?

A few to check out include: Travis Heights and most of the area just south of Town Lake; Clarksville, Rosedale, Bryker Woods, and Hyde Park.

Give us a few more details and we'll be able to give you more info!
