My dad did last year. They're replacing the plates with the new white and black ones that are easier to read and remember.

Most importantly, they are more easily machine readable, for purposes of billing you for tolls, ticketing you for red-light violations, and for other government functions.

Resistance is futile.

BTW, replace those rusty license tag bolts with rustproof nylon bolts, available dang near everywhere.

Is it actually legal to switch plates from one car to another? I can see all kinds of problems with that.

Did it for each vehicle over a 5-year period. Three different 'wagons' with one plate transferred to each...two different convertibles with one plate; but was told the newest(third) convertible had to get new plates...no transfer. Seems like it was five bucks or something to transfer vs cost of a new plate at the time of the trade/purchase of the vehicles.

I called today but got tired of waiting on the phone after 30min. The sticker and papers show my old license plate number so I'm thinking it's an accident. Anyone need a license plate? I wonder which car it goes to. Will try again tomorrow.

Good on ya(and the other posters) for checking the number. Wouldn't be a problem until you got stopped for something(anything) and they ran the tag and it came up belonging to a different vehicle

The dealership always reminded me to wait until I received all paperwork before transferring those original tags...just to avoid any issues.

I hate to say it, but I would walk that new tag into the local tag office and deal face to face with someone.

Well, so much for consistency...just renewed our registration on the THIRD vehicle to carry this now SIX year-old tag(after being assured that tags can't be transferred) and expecting a nice black and white new tag to match our other one...NOPE...just a new sticker with the 6+ year-old tag number on it.

Can't say I really care, although I don't know why we now have one old colorful tag and one new black and white....
