The only folks I know in Elgin send their kids to private schools in Austin. I think the best that can be said is that Elgin schools are adequate and not dangerous. Elgin has a small town/rural feel not a suburban feel. They have a new Dollar General and I think a Walmart. Lots of farmers/ranchers in the area who also do oil/gas service work. Nice people in my experience but with some of the more negative aspects of small town living.

Just drove through Elgin yesterday. Decided to take a slight detour off 290, following the Historic Downtown signs. Granted it was a rainy Suday, but the downtown was so deserted and sad. Most of the shops empty.

Being so close to Austin, it seems like this cute little downtown would be a perfect tourist/artist destination. Needs to be reinvented. Like Ben Wheeler, TX did. benwheelertx.com

Lockhart is soaking up that energy. Not every little town can become Fredericksburg! Elgin is more alive than the downtown looks. But it wouldn't fit many Austin newcomers.
