I liked one of the comments left, which pointed out: 1) There is very little shade at COTA, and 2) the only cool shaded place to go is the main grandstand bar. We attend most auto racing events at COTA and it's definitely the truth - the exposure to sun is really bad, and the only place to cool off is where you buy liquor. It's a long, tough day out there.

Sounds like the gap in the schedule between the day's events and the evening concert didn't help much, either. Too much down time in the blazing sun.

I read a similar article on the Statesman just after the X-Games.

They really, really need to do something about the shade. I mean just huge temporary tents or something. Awnings for the grandstands would be the best, of course, and would make the stands look more filled during the events there. I've been to a couple of races where I abandon my grandstand seat just looking for some shade. V8 Supercars was the worst. I watched some foreign fans tough it out the first day in the stands, then the next day they showed up completely red from sunburn. They still toughed it out in the stands. Final day, when the actual races happened, they were no where to be found.

I took my son with a couple other families. We had fun but, keeping cool was difficult for sure. I don't understand why they couldn't put up shade over the stands. You have to sit there with a ton of people baking in the sun. It did feel like two events the games and the concerts. Maybe sell seperate tickets for those in the future.

That was one hellish weekend. We chatted with many Aussies who almost all asked the same thing: "how can you people stand it?" That made us chuckle a bit seeing as they suffer pretty bad summer heat in Oz, too. It was just brutal. ESPECIALLY when walking through the paddock area.

Apart from evening concerts at the ampitheatre, which are often windy on that ridge, COTA sucks as a venue in my opinion. No shade, isolated, and ****-poor traffic engineering. I might or might not be bitter because my SO and I ventured too close to the madness and haven't moved a quarter mile in an hour this evening.

It's a beautiful venue but it is very isolated and yes there is no shade. They really need to plant some more trees and shrubbery.

Trees take a long time to grow into shade trees, and tents/canopies can be a problem if there's lots of wind.

Better off hoping for a cloudy day, or less hot time of year...

Why would anyone even want to go out to Circuit of Americas?

Yeah, those world class auto races are a dime a dozen...can see those anywhere. F1? What's that?
