Where in Austin, preferably south Austin near Brodie/William Cannon, can you throw away bulk trash?

I've been doing a bit of work on my house, and now have an entire pickup truck filled with random 2x4s, sheet rock fragments, etc.

Where can I throw these out, preferably for free, without waiting for the next bulk collection?

For free? Virtually no where. Especially construction debris. You can take it out to the landfill and pay the charges. Shouldn't be too much.

Landfill drop off will run you about $70 minimum, at least when I looked. I don't understand why Travis county doesn't have a dump / solid waste transfer station for residents to use at a reasonable cost. Hays county has one and they don't have a city the size of Austin.

Regarding bulk collection:

From their site:

Bulk Item Collection Crews Cannot Collect:

  • Brush, household trash, cardboard boxes, hazardous materials, mirrors, automotive chassis and bodies, motorcycles, trailers, boats and tires that are still mounted on rims
  • Sheet glass and other construction and remodeling debris
Looks like a trip to the landfill is in order...unless you hook up with someone using a large construction dumpster/bin nearby and pay them a few bucks.

Travis County transferred the one in Bee Cave to TDS. You could call them and see if they will take your stuff w/o a landfill trip. (512) 263-5265.

Thanks, I will look into that. I see a google review stating $12.50 minimum that certainly would be nicer than the minimums at the landfills themselves.

FWIW, I've taken trailers full of remodelling trash to the Hutto dump and was charged around $40 every time. I think that's the minimum charge, but each load must have been close to a ton (at least it felt that way loading and unloading). For less than a truck bed's worth of trash, I'd break it down and put it in my trash cart, bit by bit.
