Okay, we have already established that Austin is a female. NOW, what type of female? A chatty, devil-may-care one? A catty, gossipy, in-everybodys-business female? A lilleth fair type with hairy pits that sings about how men have screwed them over? Or, maybe, Austin is a lesbian......If Austin is a Lesbian, what TYPE of lesbian? A lipstick variety? Butch? S & M orientated? The type into role playing? Or is Austin a transgendered male, the type you see frolicking about during occasions like EEyore's Birthday party, wrapped naked in cellophane? Am I reading too much into the "Austin-is-a-female" thing?
Should I grab some of the leftover booze from the holidays?
Am I nuts?
And what would Ladybird think?

Austin is the pretty little hippie chick who makes her own soaps and perfumes. And then one day, someone with an expert nose picks up on the quality of said hippie chick perfume and distributes it to the rest of the U.S., where it becomes quite a buzz. As her reputation for making hippie-chic pefume grows, Austin throws on her colorful shawl and lace-up boots (the ones with the bells) and struts her bohemian rich self to the Continental Club, where she spends the night drinking beer and listening to Doyle Bramhall, Jr.
Oh yeah ... Austin SMOKES and doesn't care what the jackasses who voted for the smoking ban at the last election have to say about it ...

I like the analogy....if Austin was a female, it definitely would be a hippie chick, hands down. She will age as Austin ages. She was that young perfume/soap/candle maker in the 70's and 80's. In the 90's she grew up a bit and became a computer programmer, and danced on the side. Now, in the 00's, or whatever they call this decade(now that this decade is over, did anyone ever figure out what to call it?), she married a Californian, has kids that ride the choo-choo at Zilker Park, and volunteers at the food bank, while running a corporation. And she STILL sells table candles. Get that last analogy, that Austin is STILL funky in a small-town way? I wonder how many months THAT will last now?
Baby Hippie Chick(Austin circa 1900-1970)
Teen-age Hippie Chick(Austin 1970-1980)
College Hippie Chick(Austin circa 1980-1990)
20-something Hippie Chick(Austin circa 1990-2000)
30-something hippie chick(Austin 2000-2007)

Finally, old hippie chick, taken at Eeyore's BP(Austin of the future)

What a delightful thread! My partner and I live in New Orleans and Austin -- both wonderful cities that are decidedly female. Our beloved NOLA is more like Grizzabella, the Glamour Cat in Lloyd Webber's marvelous 'Cats' -- worldly, seen far too much, in need of rest but still aluring and mysterious Austin reminds me of the lithe tall Siamese dancer in the musical -- young, sensual, exploring. NOLA will be 300 years old in 2017; Austin just a little over half that. Perhaps a young twenty or thirty something. As a lady of a certain age, I can certainly recall how much I "tried on" when I was in my 20s and 30s -- still attempting to find who I was and what I wanted to be when I grew up. For me, that's Austin. We're blessed to have both these fine women in our lives!

The mindset itself has a strong, earthy, creative feminine feel to it. The issues that are favored/discussed per Green topics, ambiance of the city or lack thereof, peace issues, and such, also reflect a feminist mindset. Again, yet, it skews male....Am I wrong in implying that these are feminine mindsets? Can a reasonably large gay male population explain the skewing? Just what mindset should one expect from a majority male population?
And, finally, after I've gotten off my soapbox, would you consider Austin's persona male or female, and why?

Neither; I'd say the mindset there is angsty and juvenile. I'm not trying to diss; I just think there's an abundance of people there over 30 who are still trying to "find themselves".

Notice the subtle finger being given by the old hippy dude.
I'll go with the hippy chick description but add that she's grown up, has kids and drives a minivan. Some of what made her really cool before is hidden under a soccer mom veneer, and she takes better care of herself, but underneath, she's still a cool hippy chick.
It's her kids we have to watch out for.

Well, put Rome....now we'll have to decide what other US cities are female..we know the euro ones...Roma and Paris, especially Paris, the most feminine city in the world....other US fem cities.....San Francisco, Miami(sorry, Scarface, it's still feminine), San Diego, Minneapolis-St.Paul, Charleston, S.C., Savannah, Ga., Mobile, Al, Key West, and Portland. Only ones I can think of at the moment......I like the comparing them to cats in "Cats" too!
Pretty cute...........

Do you find that as sickening as 40-somethings that still wear the denim jackets and effect a 20-something look, as if the clothes would make the difference? Or 50-somethings that still say COOL, as if they were 14? I saw this woman on the Home Shopping Channel say cool that looked like she was 70. And I'll bet SHE was still trying to find herself..
