Buck Moths in Austin?
Our Maine Coon cat spent much of the day in a valiant but failing effort to catch the buck moths as they flitted against the breakfast room windows. He always looks at me with disbelief when I smash as many of his very own "cat bugs" as I can. He does not understand that his wonderful moths end up as stinging caterpillars and munch through the emerging foliage on every live oak they can find before they drop from the trees in late April and land in your lap. Sigh.
Having been in NOLA most of this buck moth season (December), we were not able to see whether the little pests also inhabit Austin. Vested interest, since we have two juvenile live oaks in front of our Austin home. Anybody know if Austin's got buck moths? If so, how bad? FYI, the moths are large heavy moths that fly close to the ground (except when they end up in the oaks, where they lay their eggs). Wings are black with whit spots. Body is black with a red spot -- even the birds know to leave these guys alone.
