My family will be transferring from California to Austin in a couple weeks and my brother is a sophomore in high school. Below are the High schools they are looking at. Are there any good, cheap (under $1000) apartments or duplexes in any of these areas? Craigslist has come up with a few. The 78756 zip code must be desirable because I cannot find much of anything there...
Anderson High - zip 78759 McCallum High - zip 78756 Austin High - 78703 McNeil High - 78729 My mom will be out for a few days to find a place next week so any info I can send her with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ![]() |

Unless you are interested in the fine arts magnet school at McCallum, you probably don't want to attend there.
You should be able to find something in the McNeil boundary for that price and possibly Anderson. Austin High would be doubtful. If so, it'd be an old rundown apt. |

I'd stick to Anderson, but add 78731 to your search. That would include all the apartments and duplexes in NW Hills.... mostly around Far West Blvd, which I believe go to Anderson. Proabably can find some for just at $1000 or below. There are also some duplexes in Cat Mountain, but probably nothing under $1000... and those might go to McAllum.
78703 would be a great close-in Austin area, but something under $1000 would probably be very small and older. |

If you use austinhomelistings.com and then filter the search to only show residential leases you will actually find a lot of houses that are available to rent. I think houses are probably a much better deal than apartments.
On the east side of 183 around mcneil I am seeing 2000 sq ft for under $1000 (around 850) and they feed into mcneil high school |

The rental pool is largest and nicest around Anderson, as the other posters noted. You might be able to find a small duplex in your budget. It won't be great, but it will be ok. Around Austin High, there are some apartments on Lake Austin that are ok. Also, the Austin High boundaries go all the way to Legend Oaks and Travis Country, and there may be some small, older houses you could rent. It's a nice area.

I suggest contacting an Apartment Locator service, which is free (they get paid by the apartments), and you'll save yourself a lot of effort and increase your chances of finding a place that best fits your needs. Steve |

That is really good to know about the zip codes. I will pass all this great info on to my family. I know they were hoping to be a little more centrally located and not so far north, but you never know.
thanks so much you guys... |

78734 is in Mc Neil zone and the duplexes are in your price range.

I live in a 2-2 that is 1100. Spacious, nice, very central. If you want more info., let me know. It's a great place to live. Older, but very nice once you get inside. |
