PadMapper Apartment Search shows numerous 1b, 1b apartments in that price range in the East Riverside Drive area as well as a dozen or more around UT.

Location, Location, Location affects cost just like in any city. IMO a centrally located apartment in the $900/mo range may be hard to come by. My daughter and her roommates pay more than that PER PERSON in West Campus - but that's a desirable location adjacent to the university. I would think it'd be do-able in some areas but I bet they'd be far from a central location.

East Riverside is probably the most central you'll get on your budget. It's an up-and-coming area with good proximity to downtown. And you'd be able to bike/longboard/walk to central amenities.

Anyone know much about East Riverside? How's the crime rate? Please note...I'm from Dallas, and we have a pretty crazy crime rate!

There's an available apartment in 12435 Dessau Rd. Austin TX 78754. 1 to 3 bedroom apartments from $699 to $809. But I don't quite sure if the allow amnesiacs you mentioned. Better contact the person in charge of the apartment for info.

It's totally fine. Austin is one of the safest cities in the country. Even the "bad" areas of town are safe.

There's some property crime (my car got broken into within the last year), but violent crime is harder to come by. I don't know the actual stats, but I haven't felt unsafe here.

I don't get why all these people are acting like it's unrealistic to find something decent for $900. You won't get anything luxurious, and there won't be a whole lot of choice, but you can get a bikeable place for that money. If you're willing to take on a roommate, you can actually get something nice. (Two beds are much more common than one beds here in Austin and more affordable too.) Use Google, apartment websites, free apartment finder agents, and Craigslist. Depending on how nice of a neighborhood you want, East Riverside is likely your best bet.

Yeah, your daughter isn't searching very hard if she can't find anything below $900 per bedroom in West Campus. If you have a roommate or three, you should not be paying above $800/bedroom unless you're living in one of those brand new midrises full of Greek-lifers.

It's crazy to think that when I moved here 10 years ago, I rented a guest house in Tarrytown for $400 per month, with all utilities included, and access to the pool. How times have changed!
