My wife, three young children, and I are new to the Austin area. I'm interested in locating a church; particularly one that resembles TD Jakes' in message and delivery. We were both raised Christian, but haven't practiced or observed in quite some time. We're a bi-racial (black & white) family; race isn't an issue, but we'd like to avoid those form whom it is. Please assist with helpful suggestions. Many thanks!

Welcome to Austin! I'm only familiar with TD Jakes from seeing a few TV appearances, so I don't know if my church is what you'd be looking for - but I invite you to join us at Greater Mt. Zion for 8am, 10am or 12 noon Sunday service. Race is no issue; service to our community and each other is what's important! It's in central Austin; let me know if I can tell you more.

Does anybody know what the Riverbend Church is like? We've been thinking about visiting, but I'm leery of flashy megachurches (and I'm afraid it is one), particularly if they promote ultra conservative politics, ostracizing minority groups (racism, homophobia, etc.).

Is anybody familiar with the church?

I don't know who TD Jakes is, but when we were out visiting churches, I remember one in particular that was especially racially mixed - Christ Community Church. Perhaps worth a visit?

Can you give an example of a flashy megachurch that ostracizes minority groups? That sounds like something you completely made up in your head. Also, churches in Austin do not promote ultra conservative politics. These just sound like gross stereotypes of megachurches to me, with no basis in truth.

How about gay marriage? Do they support that?

You might try the UCC church on Parmer in north Austin it is extremely welcoming and non-discriminatory in their message. My wife and I are a mixed marriage (I'm Jewish, she and the kids are Christian) and they welcomed us with open arms and don't attempt force me to change. I did not feel that same way at other churches when we attended and talked to church members. IMHO, Hill Country Bible Church fits your vision of the mega-church. I know some good people that attend that church but I have received the most bigoted attitudes from people very involved with that church.

Thanks! It's just that Riverbend is so close to our home and we'd like to get our small children into Sunday school, but not somewhere where they'll get indoctrinated with social and sectarian prejudices. We like Jesus the liberal, not Jesus the gay-hating, gun totin' libertarian!

I'm not familiar with Austin and don't know if this kind of bigotry is tolerated by churches here. It certainly is elsewhere in Texas, in fact it's promoted.
I think what you're seeking/asking for is a perfectly legitimate request just as it would be if you were asking for recommendations for a very conservative church. Disappointing you're getting slapped with hate.

It's not close to you but from everything I've heard, the Austin New Church might suit you well. Austin New Church / Anc Home / Anc Home

Lord, almighty!

For what it is worth, Riverbend emerged from the University Baptist Church congregation. UBC is and was an independent Baptist Church and has been inter-racial since the 1940s. They are not and have never been anything like a stereotypical Southern Baptist church. (And today, even the Southern Baptists may surprise you).

I don't know about Riverbend's position on gays but they state that they welcome everyone.

Maybe University Baptist would suit the OP?
