I'm in Manchaca TX and I want to build a 30'x40' shop. plans are for it to be on a concrete foundation. This will be for hobby, not comercial in anyway. I have a little over half an acre, so I have plenty of room. I am not in the city limits of Austin, so My question is... Do i need to get a permit to build a shop?

Any help is appreciated!

Are you in Travis County or Hays County? Both require building permits, but are probably less problematic than City of Austin. You will need to talk to them to find out the particulars.

There are no city permits needed, since you're in a County area, but deed restrictions or other restrictions may limit what you can do, especially if you're in a subdivision (even without an HOA).

You do need a driveway permit from the County if that's going to be part of it. If you're extending plumbing/electrical, you may trigger a septic permit issue. Not sure about PEC Electric and what they require.

CptnRn, Thanks for the information! I will contact the county Monday and see what they say. If they say I definitely need one I will use the link you supplied and do it online.

Austin-Steve, appreciate your reply as well. I am guessing I could find any deed restrictions within my stack of papers from closing. Any idea how I could find out about any neighborhood/subdivision restrictions? I have talked to a few people in the neighborhood and they said it is a free for all. I would like to just believe them, but I don't want a situation of the county fining me, stopping work or even worse.. making me tear down a expensive building for not following "protocol".

In what subdivision/neighborhood are you located?
