Several people are apparently missing that criteria in the original post and are recommending towns with 3,000-6,000 people.

I think the confusion is in "small cities" and "atleast 18,000 people". That cuts off at about Brownwood, which many won't think is a small city. To me, 12,000 -- Beeville (my former residence for a year) is about the upper limit of "small city".

But, YMMV.

There weren't many (any?) small cities that met that exact criteria so people were trying to be helpful and offer other cities worth considering in that geographic area. If I was the original poster, I would appreciate the info- a google search on those names of cities would quickly tell me the populations.

I've lived in a town of 10,000, and, trust me, that's a town, not a small city. Even 18,000 falls into the category of town, really. Technically, anywhere that is incorporated and provides services is a "city", but that's not how most folks use it. When Jarrell incorporated and started offering services, the population was in the 800-900 range, and it was not a city by any means.

Ok, it's doesn't have to be 18,000. I'm ok with small towns/cities from 5,000 to 30,000.

Well, as you travel NW of Austin, you head "deepintheheartof" Texas...not a lot of cities out that way(within two hours of Austin). With your new parameters, I'd vote for Lampasas. They are getting a Schlotzsky's !!!(Already have a Bush's Chicken!!!)

San Angelo is larger but farther...Brownwood is pushing your distance limit, but is closer to the population you originally asked for.

I'd vote for any of the smaller towns that have an HEB (grocery store). Lampasas is definitely one to check out.

I personally would avoid Copperas Cove & Harker Heights...they are too closely tied to Killeen and Fort Hood. (And yes, I actually lived in Copperas Cove...though it was 20 yrs ago.)

Are you going to have a chance to come down and have a look around?

You can easily go to this web page http://www.city-data.com/city/Texas.html and click on the map on any of the communities around Austin and see what the population is and get a link to the City-Data web page for that community, which will probably tell you more then you need to know about the community.
