NXP to buy Freescale, create $40 billion company | Reuters

A cursory review shows minimal overlap, but there is some.

It sounds like a BFD. I don't know what it means for Austin. Maybe travel opportunities for local employees, transplanted dutch people.

With $500M in annual cost saving identified, expect large job cuts in the C suite here. No more travel here from the world wide network of plants -- now, all will go to Eindhoven. And Austin loses 25% of its Fortune 500 companies.

So yea, in the words of our inimitable-yet-creepy VP, this IS a BFD.

Supposedly about 5000 people employed with FS here. I'd imagine cuts will happen it's just a matter of when.

Early indications are not too gloomy - the business that FS does here appears to be what NXP is most likely seeking - automotive and industrial chips. It also looks like NXP will be selling their own RF business (as opposed to the FS RF business). Yes, there will be some 'streamlining', but it does not look like it should be catastrophic.
