Anyone have any experience temping in Austin? How much is the typical average pay, about 13 an hour? How hard is it to land a good temp job in Austin?

$10-13 is about right. Without computer skills, it's on the lower end.

I think the temp programming jobs are actually jobs that would have been full-time when companies still cared a bit about their employees. These are 40-80K jobs that they just don't want to pay benefits for, which could add another 15K or so to the package. This way they can hire and fire without notice as well during downturns. I'm sure many of these programmers have been working months/years for these companies. It used to be typical for temps to only encompass routine office help. Now, its just a way to keep professionals working for you while controlling the hire/fire issue completely on the side of the company.

A side question...anyone currently temping in Austin, or anywhere, for that
matter? Are they just jiving you with the temp-to-hire thing, as typical?

Unless we have been tracking a potential hire for a while, we temp-to-hire all our application developers to make sure their skill level is where we need it to be. We just hired a temp full-time last week actually after his 6 mos was up. We pay the same for temps as we would for a full-time employee and allow them to participate in the insurance plan. They just don't have access to the retirement plan or paid vacation days.
