Hyde Park is an amazing area and I would much rather my kids grow up in a place like that than in the suburbs.
It's more likely to happen in the city. Paying 400K for a 1400 square foot home in a crime area is not better than the burbs. To each his own, I guess.

Well, you just contradicted yourself there. To each is own is right. Maybe I'd rather have a 1400 sq ft home closer to town (and crime) than a house in the burbs. It's not better or worse, it's my choice.

Nope. Stated my opinion and then put in the later sentence to be fair. Not contradicting, just polite.

atlanta hope will become famous soon enoughatlanta hope will become famous soon enough
I was really into being an urban pioneer and renovating my 1910 craftsman bungalow in downtown Atlanta. I've lived here for about 10 years. It's a vibrant, cosy, down-to-earth funky part of town and I'd hate to live anywhere else if I wanted to stay in Atlanta.

My house has been broken into 3 times in one year, my detached garage was hit a few times. Stuff was stolen off my porch ALL the time. We got a big black barky dog, we put up a picket fence up front with electric fencing, put bars on the windows, got clubs for our cars, never left anything in our cars, always keep the doors locked. I'm sick of gardening on the weekend and come to the door to find out my husband has locked me out cause I only stepped out for a few minutes without my keys and he'd gone back to sleep.

I'm tired of living this way... it's a burden you carry without realizing until you go somewhere else and you feel safer. Granted that may not be the case, but surely it's not the same as what we live in here... I've lived other places in the US and I've never had such crime problems. I'm not so naive that I don't realize there is crime everywhere but surely there is LESS crime right? Also when you have a family, your priorities change. Crap you can put with, may not be crap you want your kid(s) to deal with...

Also, I've been mugged and in 2 hit and runs. My car has been broken into a few times. I can't wait to get to Austin!!!

You're gonna tell me that I have to live THAT way in Shady Hollow or Circle C? Just waiting for something bad to happen? I'm sure that there is a problem on occasion, but I'm happy to lower the odds.

I'm sure Hyde Park doesn't have the same level of crap we have here. I would totally live there if I could find a house that fit our criteria. East Austin, well, that's another story... maybe in another 20 years or so.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

I know 78751 is part of it, not sure if it's all of it.

atlanta hope:

You'll be much safer in Shady Hollow or Circle C. Welcome to Austin! I'm moving SW as well. People love Central Austin around here but I don't think they like to face the realities of crime in the city. Hyde Park is so close to East Austin and I believe it's proximity to that area makes it more susceptible to crime. It is overpriced for what it is. I lived there, rented a home right by Hancock golf course. And even though it is up and coming, I never felt safe.

Thanks! We're really anxious to get moved. Hopefully I can do a better sales job than my earlier post to get my house here in Atlanta sold!

Everyone wants to live Central but with this happening how could you want to, especially if you have children?
Oh, come on. This stuff happens everywhere, downtown, west, east, north, south and everything in between. Remember that woman who worked at Dell and was kidnapped and killed? She lived in Round Rock. The girl who was taken from her house by a guy at her high school around Bowie? Crime is everywhere.

Th uptick in crime has much to do with lack of police presence. There are not enough for a city the size of Austin. And I have read that gangs are moving here in droves.
