OH MY GOD WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!

Austin is the safest city I've ever been in and the crime rate is way below average. Even areas such as, *GASP*, East Austin do not seem that scary or unsafe.

If you're really that worried, buy a few guns. This is Texas after all.

Um, llkltk? Do I detect a smug little tone of elitism? Your message seems to be "Okay, you people who live in Central Austin, see what your cute little old-fashioned houses and 'Keep Austin Weird' lifestyle has cost you? Now, if you'd been smart like me and decided to live in a master-planned, gated community with no soul, you'd be safe."

I agree with jread and sanmiguel - crime happens everywhere. A few years ago, I was working contract at 3M off 2222 with a bunch of people who thought I was nuts for living in beautiful South Austin, and couldn't understand why I would live here. Then, when a burglar broke in to my home. Thanks to the watchful eyes of my neighbors, who knew my schedule and immediately called the police, the burglar was caught. Of course, my co-workers immediately told me my home was broken into because I chose to live in one of "those" neighborhoods. A few days later, their lovely communities were hit hard by a series of burglaries. After a few months, it turned out it was a few high school kids who lived in their precious master-planned, gated community who had nothing to do with their time while their parents were working at, you guessed it, 3M.

Of course, I couldn't resist pointing out that if I had to be burglarized, I'd much rather it be by a stranger than by someone who lived two doors down from me. And, at least I had neighbors who knew me, and knew me well enough to call the police when a strange car was parked by my home.

Elitism? Um, as you say, no! Central Austin is full of yuppies, elitists, whatever you want to call them. I know there are those liberal hippie types but those are the renters. There is so much money in Central Austin so your post is a little off.

Well, sweetheart, not ALL of us are yuppies. I bought my house more than 15 years ago, in 78745. Right across from me, on the north side, is Ben White and 78704. A lot of my friends who bought their homes in Central Austin are in the same boat I am - we got in when no one else wanted to live there, and now we find our homes are "trendy." Honestly, we can't afford to move. And I'm a school teacher. Many of my Central Austin friends are teachers, writers, state workers, etc., basically, the hoi polloi, and definitely NOT rich. Liberal, yes. Ex-hippies, yes. But that kind of blows your little theory, doesn't it.

And you're missing my point - since when did anyone deserve to be broken into because of their geographic location? Are you pissed off because you didn't decide to live in Central Austin? Your post seems to indicate a certain sour grapes satisfaction in other people's sad plight. What's the German word for it? Schadenfreud?

And, jread, I like your style. Let's you and me go out to Mansfield Dam. We'll bring along your pearl-handled revolvers, and shoot the nutria when they pop out under the full moon. I'll bring the Shiner Bock.

Don't forget the Bowie student that was murdered by her boyfriend after school or the woman murdered by the guy pretending to be looking at her open house in great hills. What about the pregnant woman murdered in her prestigious neighborhood in RR 2 or 3 years ago.

It's everywhere and your address doesn't make you immune.

Crime does happen everywhere, but more crime happens to be central.

It reminds of the question asked of the famous bank robber....why do you rob banks? that's where the money is!
Looking at your link, most of the crime is downtown and East of 35. I think that Hyde Park is as close to 35 as lots of nice SW communities are...just a drive down William Cannon or Slaughter. The East side is not some fiery pit of hell, lots of nice people live there.

Why is everyone so testy? Just letting people know of the crime in Hyde Park. Of course everyone hates that it is overpriced. Honestly though, I have the money but am more of a suburban person. I love the community where I am moving and want to have a pool, community park, etc. Everyone has their own opinion. We are all entitiled.

I have personally never found Austin's crime to be significant when compared to other cities but to each his/her own. In the 20+ years I've lived "Central", I have experienced a total of zero crimes to report to the police. In my opinion, anyone who claims to be able afford West-Central (78703/78731/78746) but choses the suburbs, is not doing so to escape the crime.

As someone who lives "Central" and grew-up in a suburban area, I think I would prefer risking my family to the potential burglary in Hyde Park than to the near inevitable early introduction to drugs (e.g. Heroin epidemic in Plano, TX) and alcohol that suburban/Stepford boredom seems to attract.
