Austin doesn't have a VA hospital but it does have an Outpatient Clinic. Can anyone tell me about it and how it might differ from the VA hospital. I'm a Vet and am looking to live in TX and I go to the VA for my medical. So would Austin be any good for me. I'm also retired.

When you say "retired", do you mean you are a retired military annuitant? Are you Tricare eligible?

No I'm not retired from the military. I don't know what Tricare is. I'm 50% disabled from Viet Nam.

From what I hear you'd want to live around Killeen/Temple area. They have a very large hospital and clinic. Also, a base. Central Texas Veterans Health Care System Home

Plus, I do believe the cost of living there is much less than trying to live in Austin.

The base (Ft. Hood) is immaterial. He isn't retired military, so he has no access to the base or its facilities or services.

OP - the difference is, the Austin clinic is an outpatient clinic, really no different than any large multi-practice doctor office. It is a primary care facility. The hospital in Temple is an acute care facility, and where you will go if you need to be admitted or need specialty care. In Arkansas, it would be like the difference between the clinic in Harrison, and the hospital in Fayetteville.

I'm retired US Army. As noted previously, the base at Ft. Hood is not an option for the OP. The Austin Outpatient Clinic is a newer facility that offers a lot of options for you. The Central Texas VA has a good list of who does what and where.
