I will be in Austin next week and will be staying in the Northern portion of the city. I am willing to travel around to sample some of the local cuisine. Interested in local spots without throngs of people out the door, places to have a sense of history and character.

Looking for suggestions on the following:

1. Tex-Mex
2. Chicken fried steak
3. Fried chicken
4. BBQ brisket and sausages
5. Burgers
6. Home style breakfast place like a diner or cafe
7. Texas chili
8. German ?

Any other local dish that I must try just name it. I tend to have good Mexican,Asian food where I live so anything other than that would be great .

Also if you have any personal suggestions on places that cannot be missed I will make a note and check them out.

3. Fried chicken - Max's Wine Dive
4. BBQ brisket and sausages - Freedman's
5. Burgers - Casino El Camino
6. Home style breakfast place like a diner or cafe - East Side Cafe (Sat and Sun brunch)
7. Texas chili - Texas Chili Parlor
8. German - Scholz Garten or Easy Tiger (not Germn per se, but they have some German options)
If you like French try LaV, Justine's, or Blue Dahlia.

Sounds like a great list so far, thanks. What about a Steakhouse, nothing too snooty but not too drab?

1. This is blasphemy, but skip it. Texas native and still don't enjoy much past the Mexican Martinis and queso.

2. Jim's, for breakfast after the Mexican Martinis.

3. Lucy's north off Burnet.

4. Man. Crazy tough call. I'd go Franklins > LABBQ > Micklethwait. Realize that wait is part of the allure of BBQ. This is not fast food ready for you whenever.

5. Not my thing. Sorry. Burgers suck.

6. Jims.

Agree with 7 and 8 from the previous post. Steakhouse, Austin Land and Cattle. (Seems like they've rebranded lately as ALC Steaks - not sure if I always missed it or what.)

Thanks! Finally , I almost forgot to add, where is your favorite bakery? Things like fresh bread, muffins, stick buns?

Sushi - uchiko (or uchi), I usually get the entire set of fresh sushi on the special board, then 1 ham and eggs, 1 hamachi kama, and the brussel sprouts. This is not your typical sushi.

home style breakfast/lunch - south congress cafe, I usually get their gumbo. Also eat at magnolia cafe for breakfast

cajun - papadeaux (blackened catfish opelousas) or crawfish from sams boat. People like the gumbo from louisiana longhorn but I like gumbos

chicken fried steak - z-tejas is nice for that and other things. I like tostada bites and the mushroom enchiladas.

Taqueria arandas #3 on burnet for tacos and tostadas (I like the ground beef, my wife gets fajita meat).

Breakfast tacos from taco deli - I like the papas and eggs (mashed potato and eggs).

for southern food -moonshine is nice

for burgers I like the 78704 at phils ice house, hopdoddys has nice burgers as well. If you want a cheap burger- p terrys is good

Another great list of suggestions, thank you. I like your suggestion for Cajun/Creole food and the Japanese rec.

1. Tex-Mex -- bit of a drive, but Matt's El Rancho on S Lamar just celebrated their 60th anniversary. They might have it right by now. Go on Thursdays for live mariachis.

2. Chicken fried steak -- plenty of choices, but they need to be "un-fancy". Some kind of cognitive dissonance if there is wine AND CFS on the menu. That's why I'd give the nod to one of the many Jim's around town - including two N - to a close second Hoover's

3. Fried chicken - Hoover's, or Gus's downtown

4. BBQ brisket and sausages - you had to go and ask that question, didn't you? Mike Sutter has as good a take as anyone.

5. Burgers - depends. Do you want meat, bun, yellow cheese, and the usual condiments? Mighty Fine is just that. If you want creativity and decent parking (and open for lunch), Hopdoddy N is a solid choice, and near where you will be. If you can get there during the day, Nau's Enfield Drug is a flashback drugstore lunch counter with great burgers, just no fries. And all of the soda fountain classics.

6. Home style breakfast place like a diner or cafe - Jim's or an Austin icon, The Frisco Shop. If you want to try something a little different, an East Austin institution is Joe's Bakery and Coffee Shop. Mexican and Anglo breakfast items that can't be beat. Flour tortillas that are like little clouds.

7. Texas chili - Texas Chili Parlor

8. German - don't bother. Go to a fourth barbecue place instead.

Texas Chili Parlor for chili.

Mighty Fine, P. Terry's, and Short Stop for burgers.

Bill Miller's Barbecue for a chicken sandwich and/or fried chicken.

Stick with turkey if you for barbecue. That's one local barbecue thing that hasn't been a letdown for me.
