Lol- I use to live in Chicago suburbs .. North east Indiana ? You won't find anything for that price here . Only thing you can find is a roommate or similar here . The prices here just about to reach the same as chicago .

Apparently Austin has a shortage of hotel workers, close to minimal wage jobs. The reason being is because most workers can't afford to live in Austin to work in Austin.

Oh yeah, if you have a car, I keep hearing about becoming an Uber driver on the radio.

Indiana wages are going to be different than Austin Texas wages right?

Costco starts at like $15+ hour and goes up.

I used to live in Buffalo, and doubled my salary the second I stepped off the plane.

A northern suburb apartment is at least $850-$900 plus water and all utilities.

I would guess in most instances wages in Indiana for entry level work will be HIGHER than Austin!

Our price range right now is under $550/mo preferably only having to pay for internet and electric.

$550/mo is going to be really dumpy. Are you opposed to living with illegal aliens?

My current landlord that lives downstairs is Yemen, and I have no serious complaints. Our shower doesn't even work right (we have to put a clamp on the faucet so the water comes out of the showerhead), and every so often we have to chisel frost and ice out of the refrigerator.
As long as we aren't going to get mugged and stabbed when we leave our apartment and as long as everything functions decently, we'll be happy. We would just live in a tent on the beach or something but my cats are spoiled. Lol
It would be nice to live in a non-dumpy apartment, but we're not about to be picky if it means we never have to see snow again, AND we can live near the ocean without having to spend an arm and a leg on rent. Besides, we can always move again later if we decide we don't like it. Right now it's just finding a place that's affordable and not too far from potential jobs.

I do not believe that you will find ANY rental in the Austin area for $550, period. Dumpy, unsafe, or in any condition, much less one that will allow pets!

And you may will see snow in Austin and you will certainly experience temps below freezing for at least a few days each year. Try further south, San Antonio, Corpus, etc.

Well I currently am looking in Corpus, I gave up on Austin. Most people I ask say, "Don't move to Austin, try Corpus!" So I did and I've been having a fair amount of luck!
And really, I don't mind a little snow, I just hate trying to outsmart the winter weather for 4+ months out of the year in terms of, "should I lose sleep and wake up earlier to scrape off/dig my car out of a foot or so of snow, or be late for work so I'm not risking killing myself or being killed by someone else on the drive there?" And I like my sleep, especially in the dark, cold, miserable winters up here.
A little bit of snow wouldn't be unwelcome there, it would be more tolerable since it doesn't stick around forever like it does up here.

Its going to be hard to fine one anywhere in the US for $550. It's 2015 and Democrats in the house.

Do you own a gun? Might be a good investment in a $550 apartment.
