jenkirk will become famous soon enough
What area of town will you be working in? Also what is your price range? There are tons of wonderful neighborhoods here in Austin, so I think you should start with where you will be working.

The best neighborhood that is mixed, well kept up, and affordable, most houses are about 150k is the Wells Branch region in North Austin. In addition its about 20 minutes from downtown (without traffic).

It is the most populated region, has a train coming in, and is the newer part of Austin. Good Luck.

Like jenkirk said, there are lots of nice areas of Austin. What's NOT nice about Austin is commuting. If you pick a nice neighborhood and end up having to drive clear across town for work or school, you're not going to be very happy. Our road infrastructure here has not kept pace with the growth, so the best way to avoid being in that situation is to try and locate close to where you'll be working. There are lots of options for what you are looking for so you should have plenty of choices.
