After finally unpacking most of our boxes (I have a feeling we'll never unpack them all!), we ended up with a half-dozen bags of Styrofoam that stuff was packed in, either from our move here or from new appliances and furniture we just bought. It's the pre-shaped Styrofoam pieces that pack appliances - not the Styrofoam peanuts. How do we get rid of this stuff now? I did just post it in the Giving Away Free section of Craigslist, so hopefully someone will claim it and it can get re-used over and over. But if not, what's the most environmentally sound way of getting rid of this in Austin? Thanks!

try the Austin group of Freecycle.org, a much better way of giving stuff away than Craigslist

You have to join a Yahoo group and wait for 'approval' but it only takes a day or so.

AustinFreecycle : Austin Freecycle Network (AFN)

If you know a gardener they might use it - I used to break it up and pack it in the base of big planters for drainage and to save using so much heavy soil

I don't know if they operate at the consumer level, but you might contact Cycled Plastics and see if they can help you out.

Here is a good list of recycling places in Austin (including styrofoam peanuts):

Thanks for all the great info. A Craigslister is coming to pick the stuff up tomorrow (for an art project), but I bookmarked all the links for future reference. Thanks again!

Craigslist was an excellent idea. People who sell stuff on eBay (or really anyone whose business involves shipping) can recycle those packing materials... buying styrofoam/packing material retail is ridiculously expensive.

Smile Cycled Plastics is no longer

at 10200 McKalla Place and from what I was told is that they will no longer be accepting styrofoam. I do not know where they have relocated to but there is no answer at their number 339-8787. Does anyone know where there might be another styrofoam recycling place??

Our company generates a huge amount of styrofoam waste from detrashing returned products. Since we recycle 90% of ALL waste that is generated, we have to hire someone out of Dallas to come get the styrofoam and we pay to have it done. Apparently it's not easily recycled. If you only have a couple of pieces, suggest that you advertise on freecycle or craigslist - as was mentioned in the older post, ebayers and such use it for packaging.

I would be interested to hear if anyone knows of any styrofoam recycling though - hate the thought of it going to landfills.

We did some work with Austin Custom Foam up North in Austin - They have a company that picks up their excess and recycles it - I believe its local but he's a good person to contact if you're looking for a recycler - they're google-able - good luck
