Hello, I currently live in Georgia and am currently putting in applications in Austin (in higher education). I'm am interested in living in downtown Austin. I am 22 years old, new college grad and I'm not opposed to having a roommate. Do you all have any suggestions, I will visit and have a secure job before moving.

Not to worry. I'm sure a brand new grad working in higher education will be bringing in all the money they need to pay those cheap downtown rents!

He could come from money. It is also possible to live in Austin with a roommate. 1200 a month with a roommate is doable for most people.

You don't even live here, so you don't know what the job market or rental market is like. $1200 per month wouldn't cover half the rent on one of those two bedroom downtown apartments.

My gf is from Austin, I know Austin fairly well its not as expensive as people say. I do agree he might not be able to afford downtown but he could find something in Austin. Lot of college students move to UT with next to nothing and no job and find job, its not that hard.

Neither of you live in Austin, so you don't have current experience living here. Certainly there are people managing to survive in less than ideal circumstances, but that's not what the OP asked about. The OP specifically said they wish to live downtown.

1) You should probably tell us what the most you'd be willing to pay in rent is and we'd be able to help you go from there.

2) I'm think you'd be able to find something in Central Austin, especially if you're not opposed to living with a roommate.

3) Some people on this forum over exaggerate the cost of living in Austin. It's not NYC, SF, or Boston expensive. However, Downtown Austin (and when we say Downtown, we mean zip code 78701 and the southeastern-most portion of 78703) is not cheap.
