Every time I pay my bill online, I'm annoyed by this $1.50 service fee to pay by check online or card online. Every month. That is a lot of extra money they are making every year! I don't know of any other bill-paying service/utility that charges this (except for things like Ticketmaster which is different). I realize they have a monopoly in the area - that's correct, isn't it? Or is there another alternative?

You should be able to pay through your bank for no extra charge. You may have to pay a few more days ahead of time though.

a small example of a what seems to be a theme for Austin, and perhaps the overall paradigm of state capitalism

enjoy your toll roads suckers!

State of Texas charges you to pay on line for vehicle registration. Count charges you a huge amount to pay your property taxes online. Credit card companies charge them a lot of money to process those payments.

That has been my experience, Bank of America is the best I've found and no fees to pay bills that way.

^^That. Considering the credit cards probably charge the vendor 2-3%, it does not seem unreasonable to assess a fee for CC payments.

Checks are probably just due to the nuisance of handling them. If you have a checking account, then you probably have the option to do a direct transfer, instead, and save yourself the 1.50.

I just pay the fee because I'd rather do it online than drive somewhere to mail it or pay it in person. i consider that saving time and gas money. i do know they get charged a processing fee as Trainwreck20 mentioned. I figure it evens out or they may make an extra 25 cents or something

Use online bill pay with your bank, they will send a physical check.

Remember, nobody likes the word tax, so fee and toll are regularly used as replacements. The state collects enough fees that they could become their own third party processor and save us all money. That's if it really costs what they say it's does to process a record.
