I have had a few good interviews for positions in the Austin area and have been able to identify some crazy commutes before even applying for positions. I do have a question about one. I will be in the Wells Branch area. Google maps says, with no traffic, that it would take about 27 minutes to get to Stassney/Manchaca (where the position is). It would be straight down Mopac to get there. Is that commute going to be an hourish with bad traffic? Or less? Would a normal Austinite do that commute? I know some drive from RR to downtown and that seems crazy to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Holy cow! Stassney/Manchaca is pretty much ground zero for horrible, mind-blowing traffic! (Right after various intersections of 620).

When exactly do you have to arrive? Any chance for flex time? Can you move in the near future?

It was a flexibleish schedule with start times from 9-12 depending on the day. Moving closer would probably be around this time next year, but my boyfriend works off of Howard and mopac so that's a perfect spot for him (and I tried to get him to look closer when he was looking but no dice).

Probably right around an hour, maybe a bit over, would be my guess. It's not a commute I would want. Traffic will be bad until you get south of the river on the way there and jammed starting around 360 on your way home.

Ack! Boy, that would be one HELL of a daily commute.

Okay. Instead of starting a new thread I'm just going to throw this one out there: Wells Branch to the Brentwood area (excuse me if I got the name wrong)? It took me 15 minutes flat to get there at 2:45 yesterday, but that's obviously off peak hours. I was thinking 45 minutes tops with rough traffic. Is that about right?

It would be a lot more bearable if you could get to work by 8 AM (leaving Wells Branch area at 7-7:15 AM).

The general rule of thumb is to live on the side of the river you live on (if you aren't in Central Austin) because rush hour traffic going across the river is just that awful. It makes sense as there are limited number of roads crossing the river.

I get you. Live on the side of the river you work on. I guess that's not going to happen for me, at let right now.

Wells Branch to Brentwood area doesn't seem that bad. Perhaps 30 minutes? Perhaps more seasoned Austinites can comment. It is after all on the same side of the river
