Hello all,
we are thinking of moving to near Austin. Any suggestions on what would be a great community for folks with a couple of horses and a 17 year old daughter?

Dripping Springs, Elgin, Georgetown, Cedar Park, Leander, Lockhart all spring to mind. Elgin in particular is horse country. What are your other interests, to help narrow it down a bit?

I would love to know who told you "there are no bad sides to Drippin'",
If you do not mind living in a very conservative community I guess it will be ok for you. There is no water nor sewer system (although the city is now working on a sewer project) so be prepared to pay big bucks for that. City government is about 20 years behind any progressive thinking.
The community has very wealthy folks and some very poor - it is hard to be middle class there. I taught in the school system for a bit and discovered that kids with money are allowed to get away with many more bad behaviors than the kids whose parents are not so wealthy. The politics of the school were not conducive to creative learning.
The road system is very limited with only RR 12 leading into Austin and it is heck to drive on.
You could not pay me enough to live anywhere near Austin although I have family that do...and they would love to leave.

We are excited about moving back to Austin and are building in Belterra. My Co. moved us out to North Calf. Bay are in 2000. We have 2 boys ages 4,& 8, and our daughter 11 yrs old. I moved to Austin in the mid 80's. I love the Southwest area and have lived in 4 different homes south of William Cannon. Each time moving further southwest. We have checked out the Public Schools and narrowed it down to Travis, Eaines and Dripping Springs. Settled on Dripping Springs & Belterra with a beutiful greenbelt in our back yard. The elementry is but 1/3 of a mile on the hike and bike trail from our back yard. We fear Middle School for our daughter and are still checking out options for Private schools. We are a very active family with all 3 children active in swim team, soccer and baseball. My wife and I enjoy trail running. I really enjoy biking on the roads around the southwest. Fell in love with bike riding after riding the 1st "Ride for the Roses" back in the "90s". Anyway, anything anyone can eleborate on Schools, Social Political issues, sports programs, and just general pros and cons of the Dripping Springs area we'd love to hear. We will be moving in Dec.

Thank you very much for a honest answer. If you had to live in the Austin area(30-45 mi radius) where would it be?

Bad side of town? Uh... most folks don't lock their doors. I guess that means "no bad side of town"... but we live outside the "town" part of D.S. so that may make a difference.
