My commute is over an hour each way but I spend much of it on a bus or on a train. When we sold our home last year, we had plenty of closer in options but chose a lovely home 12 minutes further north. Though I have more commute time, I've finally found my happy place home-wise and cannot picture living anywhere else. Where you live should make you happy and if such place exists further out, then I'd say go for it. BUT within reason. I know the feeling of not wanting to live in a traditional subdivision. However, you can find larger lots, wildlife, looking at starry skies closer in. Have you looked at Round Rock or Georgetown? Leander? I don't live on an acre (don't want to) but there are several homes in the area that are an acre +. You may find that you'd be content with a half acre as it gives you the space but the upkeep is more manageable.

What area of Austin is your work?

Here's a little-known neighborhood with acre+ lots between Brushy Creek & Sam Bass Road on the NW side of Round Rock. Some of the families keep horses, and deer are all over the place:

Zoom in & check out the street views. No cookie cutter homes at all.

Everybody's priorities are different. I can understand the desire to live out of the city. Only you can decide if it's worth the long commute.

You can find much more room much closer than that. When we moved to the country, it was a 45 minute drive to my husband's business in north Austin (that was when I35 was still two lanes out this far). Depending on your price range (don't know what it is now), you can easily find something further out from where you are but closer in than Lake Buchanan. Possibly even on a lake, even if not one as large as Lake Buchanan. It's possible you could have it all, within reason.

It's 90 minutes today, next year it will be 95, and the next 100 minutes. Whatever the commute is today is the best it will ever be.
