a place that's good for grabbing a beer and hanging with some buds, or maybe a place to play some bags (I don't know what people call it here-I've heard it called corn hole in other parts of the country before *shivers*.

Ahh yes, I know of it as corn hole, since back in Denver getting some bags and hanging with some buds may have a different meaning ;-).

Agree with Red Horn, they got some good craft beers there. If you're more into dive bars, the Hideout near Mopac and Parmer is an option, C Hunt's Ice House is a classic, Little Woodrow's on Parmer (IMHO, "meh", but others like it and it's marginally dive), The Water Tank on McNeil Rd ($3 giant beers on Sundays and HH with big wells drinks for $2.75), Mister Tramps (was never a huge fan of it, but others like it), Parmer Lane Tavern (kinda a good bartender/bad bartender vibe), and a few others in the Wells Branch area. If you're looking for somewhere to chill and people watch, the Rock Rose at the Domain is like an uptown 6th Street (or at least that's how they describe it), but probably no where to chill and play games like that. There are also various bars such as Plucker's, Trudy's, Baker St, Big Daddy's, Chuy's, Brick House, and a few others which are more of a restaurant bar vibe. It's definitely not NW Austin, but Rainey St. downtown has places to play holes/corn hole. I say that more for if you're in the area there.

I guess in the end it depends if you're in the mood for cheap beer, margaritas, mixed drinks, or what have you. A lot of bars fit the bill of being chill to hang out with friends in. I think C Hunt's has bags/corn holes? I'm nearly certain though that Warner's Backyard in Pflugerville has it, since they have a big backyard (hence the name).

What constitutes northwest to you? Are we talking out to Lakeline, or closer in?

Basically anything north of 183/mopac and I've gotten the wagners backyard recommendation in plfugerville so if it's something good enough I guess I'd consider round rock/plfugerville.

I don't know what the OP was after, but I'd sure like to see some responses closer to Lakeline

The breweries in the 183/Metric area.

Someone already mentioned Adelberts, but there's also Circle, Austin Beerworks, and my favorite 4th Tap.

I think Oscar Blues may be open or near to opening as well.
