Hey everyone,

My fiance and I are trying to relocate to Austin and we're having trouble finding a place. We have three main points that need to be met- 1) no breed restrictions 2) decent/good reviews 3)fits within our budget of $800-$1,000. With each place that we've come across so far, we've hit one of these roadblocks. We've tried using apartment locators from different companies and they've mainly been sending us to Roscoe properties locations. From the reviews we've seen online and some in person testimonials, we do not want to do business with them. If you are a pitbull (or "aggressive" breed) owner or know the area well enough, please let me know your own experiences or any suggestions for resources and/or properties that we can look at. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Here you go!

Housing – Love-A-Bull

Your budget is a bit low for Austin, even without the dog, so I wouldn't be too picky. I wouldn't trust online reviews AT ALL! Only those with an axe to grind leave reviews for apartment complexes while hundreds of folks who had fine experiences never comment. In person would be different, overall, I've heard good things about Roscoe properties and had a family member rent from them with no issues.

Long-term, work on getting your dog a CGC or canine good citizen designation.

Is the dog obviously a pit-bull? Are there are other breeds it could maybe be "listed" as? I knew someone who rolled the dice with that idea and everything worked out.

When I used to rent with a German Shepherd, I never listed her as such. She was solid white and most people assumed she was a Husky or Malamute mix, and I just let them think that. Also, I had WAY better luck in regards to finding housing amenable to my large breed dog by renting houses/duplexes from individual landlords directly than I did from apartments or properties managed by companies. You might try to seek out those kinds of landlords.

The last landlady I had before buying a house was truly awesome--she did request that we have a meet and greet with my Shepherd before I signed the lease, but once she met my dog and saw that she was well-behaved in person, we were just fine. My Shepherd loved her and she even brought treats for her when she stopped by. I had had other friends that offered to do meet and greets with the pets when they had dogs on the "bad breed" list, and this helped them as well. Austin's rental market is much hotter now than when I last had to do this (2008), though.

I had a similar budget and found nothing suitable for me among the Roscoe and Tramor properties. Apartment locators were of no help.

MAA properties have no breed restrictions, and most of their properties are in fair to very good shape. This is a good time to rent because they have luxury apartments for under $1,000. The only problem with them are the additional fees. It's best to look at prices on a Tuesday. Also, they regularly list apartments for less than the minimum you'll find on MAA's main page. You have to go to the apartment's website to see actual rates. The complexes I looked at had over 70% of reviewers recommend them, but you also have to watch out for employees writing fake reviews.
