We're thinking of taking the kids on the Hill Country Flyer for a day out soon - does anyone have any tips for the best car to ride in, where to go to eat, shop in Burnet etc?

And when is the ol' steam engine likely to be back in service...?

There are two types of cars on the Flyer - older passenger cars and newer sleeper/lounge type cars. The major difference is the newer cars have AC the older cars have windows that raise. If the weather is nice, go for the older cars. It's easier to walk around with the kids and the open windows enhance the experience. Be sure to take them up to the engine while the train is in Burnet to meet the engineers, they love visitors - if you go close to departure time you can hear the whistle up close and personal.

i would suggest going on the second weekend in April Burnet has their Bluebonnet Festival with live music and carnival rides. This really helps pass the time in Burnett and will greatly add to the overall experience.

Thanks for that - we're hoping to go this month and then again in the spring, wondered if the steam engine will be back in service by then? The website doesn't say.....

Oh, we took our kids on that. We had a blast! You will love it and I love the little town, Burnet. I definitely recommend going on that when you can.

I am so glad someone wrote about Burnet because we are looking for some property there. We are planning a trip in April and we will make sure we go on the train ride with the grand kids for sure. Thanks again!
