I know it sounds like I'm obsessed with TV, heh, but I just wanted to point out that I think what turns people into mindless zombies is not the TV program itself (depending on what it is), but the commercials.

I think Tivo is one of the greatest things ever invented. If I watch a 1/2 hour show ("The Colbert Report", for example), it's really only about 15-20 minutes of "quality" TV. I don't watch anything live anymore, and haven't for about 6 years. I haven't seen a commercial in all that time, and I gotta say... I think I'm a happier, more self-confident person because of it.

Even if you hardly ever watch TV (and especially if you're kids watch it), I highly recommend Tivo. It's totally worth it. I actually rarely even go to the movies anymore because I'm furious that I am now made to sit through commercials if I want a good seat. And PAYING for the "privilege"!

Someone (in a book, heh) once said "The one thing you won't ever hear from a commercial is that you're OK just the way you are." Personally, I think if anything is "destroying" America... it's marketing.

Does the Alamo Drafthouse make you sit through commercials before the movie?

Plenty of previews, not so many commercials.

I guess I am guilty. We have 8 TVs in our home and our game room was converted into a dedicated home theater w/ a 120" screen, Surround sound w/ THX/Dolby Digital.
Other rooms that have tv's are 4 bedrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen.

We do not own cable TV but we do have DSL.

I say TV can get used for about 2-4 hrs total a day (kids included)

I agree that Tivo = Best.Invention.Ever. It saves me so much time...and then I use up all the time I saved wondering why I've committed two years of my life to watching LOST and still have nothing more figured out on that darn show than I did in the first episode
