Dirty 6th also has Casino El Camino, Easy Tiger and Jackalope. All fine restaurants. I've gone, but during the daytime for lunch.

I work around sixth street. What a cesspool. Reeks of puke and cheap booze. Bums everywhere along with unwashed drug users and pushers. Bleh.

The only time I'd willingly go to Dirty 6th is during (traditional) happy hours; I went to the Chuggin' Monkey and had a good enough time during the afternoon on a few occasions. But, I'd rather go to bars on Burnet Rd or Airport Blvd or Guadalupe (kind of like Magazine and Freret in Nola in terms of drinking at bars where the locals go).

However if you wanna go out and party and drink and dance and get drunk and the music is secondary, then you would most likely rather go to 6th Street.

I wouldn't feel unsafe on 6th Street, but I think you would be more likely to see a fight on 6th Street than places where you're going for the music.

Anything can happen anywhere at anytime, but i would think you would have less than a 10% chance of seeing a fight on 6th Street.

And your a chance of being a crime victim on 6th Street is probably less than 1%.

That's just my opinion. I can't verify any of those figures.
Those percentages are extremely high in my opinion. In 2015 there were only 107 Aggravated Assaults in all of the downtown zip code 78701. That is less than one every three days. Interestingly enough there are three other zip codes in Austin which have higher numbers of Aggravated Assaults.

Crime Information Listed by Zip Code | AustinTexas.gov - The Official Website of the City of Austin

Even the total number of "Indexed crime" in 78701 during 2015 was only 2,205, probably far, far less than 1% of the total number of visitors to 6th street each year.

I live downtown and like going to bars on Dirty 6th Sunday-Wednesday when they're more relaxed and chill. Thursday-Saturday...hell no unless I'm playing a gig (and gigs on Dirty 6th don't pay anywhere near what I charge!).

I never go to dirty 6th except for the rare Esther's Follies show when out of towners come and I need to entertain them.

I took a friend from Minneapolis to 6th a couple of years ago. His only comment was that it was the trashiest place he'd ever seen and "get me outta here". That, coupled with Austin gridlock, convinced him to never return. I did get him out to the Oasis for margaritas and he thought the scenery was fantastic out there.

I'd say if you park around 6th Street, don't leave valuables in plain view inside your car. Last night I ran an errand near W 6th and a guy was like, "Hey buddy, you should lock up and keep valuables out of sight, I used to have a window here (pointed to his window)." At first I thought he maybe had one too many, but then I looked down and saw all the shattered glass near his vehicle. Not saying this to scare anyone, but as a reminder.

I never go to 6th street except for one or two times I went there on a Sunday morning to get Voodoo donuts for my kids.

Ditto

Back in the 80's I used to walk down to 6th street by myself to meet friends and felt relatively safe doing so. Now, no way. The college drunks are one thing but now there's just too much trouble-making trash down there.
