Or they don't want to be involved. And that's 99.9% of the problem.

You are correct that money is not the issue.

Just curious, since it seems that the Asian kids are doing gymnastics, soccer, and riding up and down the street on their scooters just the same as our non-Asian kids.

Yes, education goes beyond what happens in the school - but routine, rest, good nutrition, and interaction with other kids goes further than grinding homework.
Not in my neighborhood.. Go to the kumon at oak knoll. Almost 100% asian.

Wht schools are you involved in that parents don't want to be involved in their child's school? I've said it a couple times here on the forum. When you have a parent who works 50 hours day a week to support their family it's not that they don't want to be involved it's that they can't. There's a big difference between a family of four who has a father who is an executive director at some tech company making $500k which gives mom an opportunity to be at school everyday and a family of six making 35k a year.....just a thought.

it is. kumon is an after school academic program. The point is the parents have their kids working after school until late at night, even at young ages (pre-k and kinder), to get ahead. Oak Knoll kumon services laurel mountain and kathy caraway elementaries.

If you want to pretend that the parents are all the same, you can do that. My point is the asian kids dont play outside because they are indoors studying from a very young age.

Here is a study:
Quote:
Compared with white mothers, Asian mothers were 49 percent less likely to take their kids outside daily, and black mothers were 41 percent less likely. Hispanic mothers had 20 percent lower odds of taking their kids outside daily than white moms.

Race and Ethnic Groups
When time spent on children’s education was defined as spending at least 20
minutes or not spending at least 20 minutes, race and ethnic group differences did exist.
Asian Americans were statistically significantly more likely than European Americans to
spend at least 20 minutes on their children’s education (b = .57, p < .001, Table 3, Model
1). The odds of spending at least 20 minutes were 77% higher for Asian Americans than
for European Americans. Latino Americans were statistically significantly less likely to
spend at least 20 minutes on their children’s education (b = -.29, p < .05). Latino
Americans’ odds of spending at least 20 minutes were 25% lower than European
Americans

Asian high-school students spend significantly more time studying and doing homework, Ramey found, than any other ethnic or racial group. Averaged over the entire year (including summer vacations), the average, non-Hispanic white student spends 5.5 hours per week studying and doing homework, while Hispanic and non-Hispanic black students spend even less. In contrast, the average Asian student spends a whopping 13 hours per week.

I agree with 97. Families that truly engage their children and offer an environment full of additional learning opportunities will naturally result in brighter children. For most Asian families, this is a traditionally strong tenet of parenting. It's tragic that many parents are too overworked to afford such attention, and that many children simply lack the self-control and attention span needed to succeed in the classroom. But it's really nobody's else's fault that it is this way. It just is. Teachers and school districts can't do it alone. Without a strong parental commitment, children can't reach their full potential.

Schools are actually not very parent friendly if you have small children in addition to your school age ones. So it is entirely possible to be a stay at home parent and be shut out of school-day volunteering as well. Most schools just don't seem to be focused on getting parents involved other than the occasional evening activity (and of course, forcing fundraisers on everyone).

Agreed. We have space for little ones on campus. But I'm sure that's not the norm.
