Darn. The idea of exclusivity that could not be bought was kind of attractive...

Thanks for the quick feedback, everyone! Very interesting to hear. My husband and I are coming from a neighborhood where we were the youngest people by at least 25 years, so we're definitely hoping for at least some people closer to our own age (30s) and lifestyle this time around.

My 2 cents... I think there are different degrees of "old money" neighborhoods. Old Enfield, Pemberton, Tarrytown etc are nothing like the old money neighborhoods in the Northeast. In the NE, you can sense the anti-outsider feelings just driving through! The turnover rate is higher in those Austin neighborhoods, even without the teardowns. I think if you like it there and take care of your house you'll fit in just fine. Besides, these neighborhoods are fairly small and you'll be close to downtown, which is going to be a completely different vibe with all the new residents... so you won't have to go far if you want a different neighborhood "feel."

Austin has never been much of an old-money town as compared to say, San Antonio or Dallas as far as Texas goes. I think once upon a time there were some old-money families in west Austin neighborhoods but things have changed a bit with all the growth and newcomers.

It is strange how one house can be 500k and the place nextdoor is a duplex renting for $1k per side with some college kids whereas the house across the street is $1million+. Sort of an odd mix. The neighborhood is nice, but there is not a lot of neighborhood-centric activity on that street. The more exclusive part of the neighborhood is East of Hartford. |
