Thanks plaidmom, I have and was hoping there was another venue out there. I have grown tired of the Elephant and the "trendy" spots I was hoping for something lower key. The way Antones use to be.

Victory Grill on E. 11th. From IH-35 go up the hill, it will be on left side. Yellow building, older looking - can't miss it.

Yay, I knew a current Austinite would have the 411
Uhm, I suppose it's good to hear that the Elephant room has ascended to "trendiness" LOL. It used to be such a dive. Have the students *discovered* jazz???
RIP Antones indeed......

My take on Austin's music scene:
Gets an "A" for White blues (if ya know what I mean) and maybe a "B+" for blues overall (this isn't Memphis and it SURE isn't Chicago)
Austin gets a "D" for jazz, especially considering we're the "Live Music Capital of The World"
Some world-class jazz comes to the One World Theater, Bass Concert Hall, etc., but for club jazz and a local "scene" it's actually pretty pathetic here. I've always referred to jazz as the Achilles Heel of the Austin music scene.
Not that we're a great city for opera or classical, but that's a different world altogether and I don't think we should even aspire to that. Leave it to the New Yorks and Philadelphias to fill those top spots.

I managed nightclubs here for a few years, and I booked the bands. Good blues and Jazz are hard to come by, check the Chronicle, but if elephant has gone trendy then I'm not sure what to tell you. The simple fact is that Blues and Jazz crowds don't generate a great deal of sales for a venue. The clientèle generally don't drink as much and unless you charge a cover its hard to be profitable, and a cover over 5 bucks in Austin always goes over well.
Live music capitol of the world; we sure do have great marketing.

In spite of how "Chamber of Commerce" that slogan sounds, it's supposedly a "fact" that Austin has more live music venues per capita than any other city in the USA. Of course any time you "win" the USA, it's called "The world." Kinda like how all our national sports have "world championships" or a "world series." So Austin is just reflecting the American tradition of thinking "we ARE the world!"
