Default Car Tax/Personal Property

Hi Guys,

What is the tax rate on personal property in Austin for items such as cars?

In Virginia it is quite high and I was told by my partner that it is much lower in Austin. Thanks

There is no property tax on personal vehicles in Texas AFAIK, just a yearly registration fee (about $70 bux for me), and sales tax when you buy the vehicle.

The registration fee is all I've ever paid. Now, business vehicles are different, as I understand it.

Well that is something positive regarding taxes!
In Virginia the tax on a vehicle valued around 30K is about 1500-2000K.
So that should be factored in as well when thinking about the high property taxes.
Thanks,

Is that to say that when I register my vehicles in TX for the first time (have moved from out of town)...that I won't get dinged hard for first-timer?

There is evidently a $90 new resident fee for registering your out of state vehicle for the first time in Texas.

You will, also, have to get the vehicle inspected and have proof of insurance (but people who've lived here forever have to do those annually, as well, and you'll need proof of insurance to get your vehicle inspected, as well).

That's only for purchase; the OP was asking about yearly property taxes.
